Syracuse Earns a Perfect Score for LGBTQ+ Equality – Here’s Why That Matters

Syracuse just made history—again! For the second year in a row, our city has earned a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign’s (HRC) Municipal Equality Index (MEI), a nationwide assessment of LGBTQ+ inclusivity in municipal policies, laws, and services. This achievement speaks volumes about Syracuse’s commitment to being a place where LGBTQ+ residents and visitors can live, work, and thrive. Read the city’s press release here.

At Come Out Central New York, we’ve always believed that Central New York is a welcoming, inclusive, and vibrant place for LGBTQ+ people and their allies—and this score affirms it. The MEI evaluates cities across the country on their nondiscrimination protections, municipal services, law enforcement, and leadership’s public positions on LGBTQ+ equality. Scoring a 100 means that Syracuse isn’t just keeping up with the times—we’re leading the way.

Why This Matters

This recognition is more than just a number. It’s a reflection of the hard work being done by local leaders, organizations, and community members who push for equality and inclusion every day. Mayor Ben Walsh and the Mayor’s LGBTQ+ Advisory Board continue to advocate for policies and initiatives that support our community, helping to build a Syracuse where everyone feels safe and celebrated.

For those considering moving to or visiting Central New York, this achievement reinforces that Syracuse is a great place to call home. With a growing network of LGBTQ+-friendly businesses, vibrant events, and a community that actively champions equality, there’s never been a better time to be part of our region.

Looking Ahead

While we celebrate this milestone, we also recognize that the fight for full equality and inclusion is ongoing. We’re committed to continuing our work to highlight LGBTQ+-owned and inclusive businesses and resources, promote inclusive events, and create spaces where our community can connect, grow, and thrive.

If you’re looking to get involved, check out our local events calendar, support our LGBTQ+-owned and inclusive business directory, and join us at one of our networking events. Let’s keep building on this success—together.
